There are a
few reasons to change to a VoIP telephone system from a POTS (Plain Old
Telephone System)
I've outlined a few below
I've outlined a few below
- Line Rental Savings
- Call Cost Savings
- Better Features
- Less Equipment to run and maintain
- Easier and Quicker Cabling for refits and extensions
- Relocation Convenience
1 - Line Rental Savings *This example assumes a POTS line costs $30 per month |

|
An example business rents 4 phone lines and a fax line. They have ADSL
connected on the fax line. This system costs them $150 in line rental
per month and as shown on the right, $200 when Internet is added.
This is an average 512/128Kb/s ADSL plan, which is practically enough for 4 virtual phone lines, but they may find they need to upgrade to at least a 1.5/256kb/s An average price for renting a standard virtual line from an Internet phone service provider is $10. After working out all the monthly prices, right, the VoIP system costs $120 per month, which gives a monthly saving of $80 and a yearly saving of $960 |
Monthly cost - POTS 4 X $30 for Phone Lines 1 X $30 for Fax Line 1 X $50 for ADSL Connection Total monthly cost |
=$ 120 =$ 30 =$ 50 =$ 200 |

2 - Call Cost Savings |
||||||
Using MyNetFone and average land line call costs as a guide, the call cost savings are as follows
The interstate/STD calls have the biggest saving. They are only 10c! When compared, even to a capped plan at $2.50 for 2 hours, that's a saving of $2.40 PER CALL if you stay under 2 hours, and even more if you need to talk for longer and you get that price whenever you call!! Mobile calls are still a little more expensive, but are still over 10c per minute cheaper than most standard plans so they have a great saving potential as well. Making 100 local calls will save $5, but make 100 interstate calls and you'll save at least $240! The difference in mobiles would be best seen by comparing your last bill. |

3 - Better Features |
||||||
| Feature generally only found on the higher end PBX systems come throughout the range of Linksys VoIP equipment. As with normal phone, this is dependent on the features supported by the service provider, but many providers have most or all of the features. Some features include Caller ID Display, Voice and Video Conferencing, | ||||||
4 - Less Equipment |
||||||
| Although this isn't a huge monetary benefit, the amount of equipment can theoretically be halved by changing to an IP voice system. This results in less electricity being consumed which means less heat is produced. This allows smaller equipment racks and cooling and ventilation systems. You can also have one less person to have to deal with as the IT guys deals with the phones as well. | ||||||
5 - Easier Cabling |
||||||
| You may not intend refitting or expanding very soon, but imagine if you do, you could cut your cabling costs by almost 1/3 by completely removing the need to cable a telephone point. All that is needed is power and network. | ||||||
6 - Relocating |
||||||
| When moving, you don't have to organise it with the phone company, so relieves one stress. All you have to do is disconnect the equipment from the old premises, and then connect it up at the new one, and it will find the server and such itself automatically. | ||||||
